The UAH Botanical Garden has been recognized by CITES

In Spain, only the Botanical Garden of Madrid and the Natural Sciences Museums of Madrid and Barcelona have this recognition for the conservation of fauna and flora.

The Juan Carlos I Royal Botanic Garden of the Universidad de Alcalá has been recognized by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as an institution that seeks to preserve the conservation of wildlife species by controlling their trade.

This recognition involves the registration and legalization of the species that are part of the Botanical Garden, as well as the possibility of always exporting them for scientific and research purposes with other botanical gardens and similar institutions around the world.

CITES requires that all wild animals and plants be documented and known of their origin and destination, so that the whole process is carried out in a sustainable manner with the environment. Something very important to protect endangered species and regulate trade in threatened or endangered species.

All this protection extends to animals and plants, live or dead, their derivatives or products containing them, i.e. skins, ivories, shells, musical instruments, seeds, perfumery extracts, etc. made from specimens included in the Convention are also protected.
