Donations to UAH projects related to COVID-19 exceed EUR 325,000

Universidad de Alcalá appreciates its contribution to the nearly 100 donors, including companies and individuals, who have supported research against COVID.

UAH Patronage Area launched the 'Now, more than ever, we need your help' campaign a few weeks ago. This action was born with the objective of raising funds to contribute to the financing of solidarity initiatives related to COVID19 that are being carried out at Universidad de Alcalá. Since then, donations have already gone over EUR 325.000 and support continues to be provided between individuals and companies.

The work lines of the different projects are from medicine, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry, robotics, labor market analysis, among others. In addition to those already mentioned, UAH researchers are conducting, for example, a study to improve the treatment of COVID-19; they are working on the development of an ultra-rapid multisense platform for early diagnosis, evaluation and follow-up of SARS-CoV-2 virus in potential patients; or they propose the organization of a platform on the importance of the Humanities in health crises.

Led by Melchor Álvarez de Mon, professor of medicine and immune system disease, the proposal that has recorded the most donations is focused on the characterization of therapeutic individualization. In the absence of a vaccine, it is key to know precisely what medication and treatment a COVID-19 patient requires at any given time.

Eva Senra, Vice-Chancellor of Economy, Employability and Entrepreneurship, has commented that ‘economic support is important, but so is the feeling that we are not alone. University and society are one supporting in overcoming the disease and its effects. Thanks also to those who follow us and help us to spread this initiative. We can all contribute in different ways, don't stop accompanying us’.

For the development of all these projects, the UAH is in constant contact with Public Research Organisms (PROS). PROS is a group of public research institutions that, together with universities, form the core of the Spanish public system of scientific research and technological development.

Donations to these types of initiatives have very favorable tax treatment. In the IRPF declaration, the private donor may be deducted up to 80% of the amount donated, while in the case of companies it may reach up to 40% in the full corporate tax quota.
