Almudena Nobel: 'Gender roles in which women are mostly engaged in care continue to be perpetuated'

Universidad de Alcalá presented the 1st edition of the Francisca de Nebrija Awards on March 10th10th, a new distinction that the University gives to those who stand out for their work in favor of equality. There are three categories of awards: Best End of Grade work, Best End of Master work and Best Doctoral Thesis.

The medal award, which took place on March 10 at the UAH Paraninfo, awarded M. Almudena Nobel Ezquerra in the category of End-of-Grade Work. The End of Grade work is entitled 'Gender Impact on the Development of Rural Tourism in the province of Guadalajara', directed by Dr. Remedios Menéndez Calvo.

- We imagine that you are very satisfied with this recognition.

Yes. Recognizing your work with a prize produces great satisfaction; it shows that the work you have done, that all the effort and hours spent, have resulted in something positive, something that can inspire future research and can bring knowledge to our society.

- In what area of research do you work?

As part of my work I carry out analyses on the situation of women in the university field, from entering higher education until graduating and during their career as teachers and scientists.

- Could you tell us about the research for which you have obtained this award?

It is a study on how the development of rural tourism has impacted the lives of women living in the rural environment, focusing on the autonomous community of Castilla La- Mancha and deepening in the specific cases of two localities of the Serranía de Guadalajara: Hiendelaencina and Pálmaces de Jadraque.

I chose these municipalities because they are located in an area with all the qualities to be exploited in terms of rural tourism but that, despite this, are not as developed turistically as possible. In addition, initiatives have been carried out in both localities to promote this tourism development.

In conclusion, it should be noted that, although women have joined tourism businesses in a higher number than in traditionally rural activities such as agriculture and livestock, gender roles in which women are mostly engaged in care continue to be perpetuated. It should be noted that the business model itself is a service of attention and care (accommodation and catering).

- What projects do you currently have for the future?

Finished studying a postgraduate major in gender equality, in which I have been able to deepen the situation of rural women and it is something I would like to further investigate.

- Where and how do you see yourself in 10 years?

As I've already commented, I'd like to continue research on rural women. By way of closing, I would like to share a tip with those who dream of doing research in any area: go for it! There's nothing more exciting than fulfilling a dream and seeing your work come true.
